
National Innovation Award

The Institute of Water is directly supporting the aims of the European Commission water directorate and Water Sector Innovation Leadership Group by providing the stage on which to recognise UK water and sewerage innovation.
The National Innovation Awards gives a much needed spotlight for the many innovative companies to demonstrate their excellence, and is just part of the commitment the Institute of Water is making to promote the right cultural environment and encourage pride in the sector.
Professor Martin Cave will present the 2012 National Innovation Award at the President’s Dinner in London on Friday 18 May. The winners will be selected from entrants short-listed as winners of regional awards, details of which can be found below.
Northern Ireland Area Innovation Awards
For individuals, teams or organisations employed directly or indirectly for the benefit of the water industry in Northern Ireland.
The Awards aim to recognise outstanding innovations within the industry, in four distinct categories:

Northern Area Innovation Awards
Open to all individuals, teams or organisations that operate within the Northern Area of the Institute of Water. The Northern Area comprises of the operational areas of Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water and United Utilities. Entry is not restricted to IW members.
The Awards aim to recognise outstanding innovations within the industry and entries should fall into one of these categories:

Scottish Area Strictly Innovation Awards
• Do you have an innovative idea for a product or process that could help to drive improvements in the water industry?
• Would you like the chance to share it with industry leaders across Scotland and beyond?
• Would you like the opportunity to win £1,000?
This competition is open to anyone working in the water industry in Scotland with an innovative idea. Submissions can include any type of innovation such as products, processes and systems or services. They can be existing or conceptual.
The awards aim to recognise outstanding innovations within the industry from all arenas including Customer Experience, Operations, Asset Management, Capital Delivery and Health and Safety.
A master judging panel will put forward the top innovations to an online vote and the winner will go on to represent Scotland in the Institute’s National competition and pick up a £1,000 prize.

Eastern Area Innovation Award
The aim of this competition is to promote and reward innovation within the Water Industry and recognise those that are leading the way. The competition is open to both individuals and teams that are operating within the Eastern Area, and includes innovations that are in use, and those that are conceptual.
We know that there are excellent examples of creative solutions being delivered across the Eastern Area. If you are have an innovative product, process or service that has the potential to drive improvements in the Water Industry, now is the time to tell us about it and gain the chance of regional and national recognition.
Winners of the regional Awards will be put forward for the National Innovation Award which will provide a fantastic opportunity to gain recognition and exposure at a national level within the industry.

South East Area Innovation Award
These awards are open to all individuals, teams or organisations that operate within the South East Area of the Institute of Water. The South East Area comprises of the operational areas of Portsmouth Water, South East Water, Southern Water, Veolia Water (South East), Sutton and East Surrey Water and Thames Water. Entry is not restricted to Institiute of Water members.
Employees are invited to propose an innovation that they feel worthy of recognition. There really is no limit to what we are looking for – it can be a new way of thinking, a new business process or invention that can be shown to have benefits for the way we work, the environment or for our colleagues or customers.

South West Area Innovation Award 2012
These awards are open to all individuals, teams or organisations that operate within the South West Area of the Institute of Water. The South East Area comprises of the operational areas of South West Water, Bristol Water, Wessex Water and Sembcorp Bournemouth Water.
Employees are invited to propose an innovation that they feel worthy of recognition. There really is no limit to what we are looking for – it can be a new way of thinking, a new business process or invention that can be shown to have benefits for the way we work, the environment or for our colleagues or customers.Please send your completed application form to pr@wrcplc.co.uk by 24th February.

I have already been very impressed by the innovations I have seen in the sector from firms large and small. That is why I am very pleased to present the Institute of Water National Innovation Award this year, and I hope and expect that we will see many of the competitors’ ideas in action soon.”
The first winners of the National Award were Ashtead Plant Hire for their Auto Tool Hire Unit.

Energy & Utility Skills organise two awards and all short-listed entrants are invited to join Energy & Utility Skills at the President's Dinner at the Institute of Water's Annual Conference. Here the winners are presented with their trophies in a prestigious ceremony, surrounded by senior figures from the water industry. There are two categories of Award:
Business Skills Award
Is for an initiative which has contributed to business skills, e.g. resourcing, restructuring, upskilling, productivity drives, innovations and the introduction of new technologies.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Award
Is sponsored by the Institute of Water. It is open to individuals at any stage in their water industry career who can demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Applicants will be expected to belong to a professional body but not necessarily the Institute of Water.

Utilities and Service Industries Training Limited (USIT) is a charity providing grants and bursaries for education and training for the utilities industries. USIT was established in 2004 to advance education and training in the water industry for the public benefit, primarily in the water industry, but also in other public utilities, service industries and government departments and agencies.
The charity is currently managed by four trustees who care about the future of the utilities industries and are committed to supporting education and training. Each of the trustees holds or has held a senior position in the Institute of Water and the ethos of both organisations are closely aligned.
There are three types of Awards available:
1. Harvard Award
Sponsorship to attend the High Potentials Leadership Program at Harvard Business School
2. Business Skills Award
Sponsorship of up to £7,500 to attend an established academic or training course of your choice in the UK which is relevant to the utilities industry
3. CPD Award
Sponsorship to attend the Annual Conference of a relevant professional body
