Northern Ireland Area Lunch & Learn: Flow Cytometry

The first Northern Ireland Area event of 2018 is being held at Gelvin Grange where we will hear Northumbrian Water's Media Laboratory Co-ordinator, Aidan Marsh, present on their Flow Cytometry Project.

Flow cytometry differs from conventional culture based methods for detecting bacteria in water such as heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) by instead using a laser to count the number of cell in a focused steam of sample water. Combined with fluorescent staining, flow cytometery can be used to determine the condition of the cells (dead/alive) and has demonstrated that less than 1% of the bacteria in water is actually detectible when using conventional methods. The ability to enumerate the number of bacteria in water is fundamental to the effective treat and management of potable water emphasising the importance of flow cytometry.
