Climate Change Wise Up!?- Mitigation and Adaptation
As it swept ferociously across the UK and Ireland, Storm Ali, the first named storm of the season, left in its wake loss of life, destruction and disruption to utility systems and property across these islands.
As we were battening down the hatches in preparation for Ali, the people of the Carolinas in the USA were experiencing flooding, destruction and disruption, on an enormous scale as Hurricane Florence ripped through the region.
Before that, we were dealing with; the joint hottest summer on record dating back to 1910, The Beast from the East last winter – the coldest winter for almost 40 years, summer flooding in August 2017…. And on it goes.
Climate Change – fact or fiction? Whilst the debate might rage for decades, there is no denying that all of us are seeing and experiencing significant, disruptive shifts in our weather patterns. All of this is making it increasingly difficult to deliver, without interruption, the services we provide to our customers.
This has pushed resilience to the top of the agenda for utilities and their regulators. So how can we adapt and mitigate to address the challenges that climate shift and disruptive, destructive weather patterns bring to us all?
Is there more we can do to plan for the changes we are seeing? Can our engineers redesign and adapt our assets, making them tougher and stronger? Instead of toughening up, can we make more of so-called “soft engineering”, where we recognise nature and the environment are not just part of the problem but also probably an ever-growing part of the solution.
What about the role of the customer? Can they help? Is it time for a shift in attitude from all of us as customers? Perhaps we as the experts – engineers, customer service professionals, environmentalists, regulators - can work with customers to help them see that adaptation and mitigation is something they do with us.
As we head into the Winter Season our Autumn Seminar will consider these matters from a range of speakers who will stimulate debate and discussion and have us all thinking about our role. Climate Change – it’s time to wise up.
