Institute of Water Welsh Area Innovation Awards

The Welsh Awards are open to any individuals, teams or organisations working in the water industry within the Welsh Area of the Institute of Water.


2017/18 Welsh Area Innovation Awards

The Welsh Area Innovation Awards awards are open to all individuals, teams or organisations where innovation has been utilised or developed within the Welsh Area. Entry is not restricted to Institute of Water members.

This year’s categories were:

  • Market Adaptation
  • Entrepreneurial Ideas
  • Collaborative Working
  • Clever Data

The overall winners of the award were Dwr Cymru Welsh Water with their innovation ‘Vehicle Fit’.


2016/17 Welsh Area Innovation Award Winners

This year’s annual Institute of Water, Welsh Area Innovation Awards were held at the Great Hall at Swansea University’s new Bay Campus. The 11th annual awards brought together industry professionals from across the Welsh Area to celebrate the most innovative work over the past 12 months. Wynne Evans, aka Gio Compario of the Go Compare adverts hosted the event, which was attended by over 300 people.

This year’s winners were:

Environment Award – Deep Rooted Solutions: Growing Landscape Resilience, Ryan Bowen and the Catchment Team, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

Engineering Solutions – Mobile Filter Cartridge Frame, Arfon Jones-Hughes and Sophie Straiton, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

Technological Advances – Collaborative working on the Sharepoint site, Katherine Gouws of ARUP and the Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water Capital Alliance

People/Customer Service – Alliance People Business Plan, Jenna Nicolle-Gaughan and the Welsh Water Capital Alliance

Idea Award – Interactive Works Operating Manual, Glen Peek, Ben Cale & Gary Smith, Integrated Management Systems team at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

Chairman’s Award – Automatic Flushing Cap, Ian Dickson of the North East Distribution team Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water


The Overall winner was Ryan Bowen, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s Catchment Team with their Deep Rooted Solutions; Growing Landscape Resilience. Ryan and the team went on to represent the Welsh Area at the Institute of Water National Innovation Awards in June 2017 and took the second place award.
