Lynn Cooper

Chief Executive

Lynn left her native Glasgow in 1983 with an Accountancy degree and qualified as an accountant with Sunderland and South Shields Water Company in 1987. She remained with the company when it became North East Water then Northumbrian Water until January 1997 when she moved to the Institute of Water as General Secretary.

Lynn is an athletics coach and a former international Marathon runner, having represented Scotland at two Commonwealth Games and held the Scottish record from April 1989 to November 1991. She has also represented GB at distances from 15k to 100k. Lynn also follows football and is an adopted Inverness Caledonian Thistle fan. Away from work Lynn is most likely to be found at the athletics track coaching Houghton Harriers.

Lynn was appointed as Chief Executive and a Board Member in December 2007. As Chief Executive Lynn oversees the day to day running of the Institute and manages a team of 3 full time staff. Lynn also takes on an ambassadorial role and is often promoting the good work of the Institute amongst other Chief Executives and senior leaders across the water sector.

In addition to her work as Institute of Water Chief Executive Lynn was also a Founder Director of the Society for the Environment, where she served as Treasurer for 8 years, and a trustee of Utilities and Service Industries Training Limited – a charity providing grants and bursaries for education and training.

Dan Barton

Marketing and Communications Manager

Dan completed his degree in Business with Marketing at the University of Northumbria and is now a Chartered Marketer. Before joining the Institute of Water in 2012 Dan spent several years working in marketing and communications at Northumbria Police followed by a similar role at a recruitment firm in North East England.

Dan is a big sports fan and follower of all things Newcastle United. His Monday mornings are often spent in utter despair or complete elation (more often the former). Dan is also a keen dog lover and his cocker spaniel Theo occasionally makes an appearance in the office.

Dan’s role is wide ranging and covers anything and everything that features the Institute of Water logo. Primarily he oversees the Institute of Water Journal, the Annual Conference & Exhibition and manages our website. Dan also promotes Institute of Water offerings to our stakeholders with a view to bringing new members and partners on board.

Jordan Maloy

Business Administration Apprentice

Jordan recently joined the Institute of Water as our first ever apprentice. After leaving school in 2008, Jordan studied at Gateshead College for two years and gained a national diploma in coaching and fitness.

Jordan is a keen football fan which he plays a 2-3 times per week and is a big supporter of Sunderland AFC (unfortunately). Jordan also enjoys going to the gym, swimming and walking his dog.

Jordan’s role within the company involves dealing with enquires, processing payments, sending welcome letters and chasing overdue subscriptions. He looks after our membership cycle and is the main point of contact for any matters regarding membership.

Lucy Archer

Marketing and Events Administrator

Lucy recently took over the role of Marketing and Events Administrator. Before joining the Institute of Water Lucy was an Assistant Manager at Costa Coffee for a number of years and has graduated from Northumbria University with a degree in Business with Marketing and a masters in Design Management.

Lucy has recently discovered a love for running and having completed the Kielder 10K is now looking for a new challenge and is training for half marathons. Having grown up on a farm weekends are now often spent escaping the city and returning to the countryside.

Lucy’s role within the company involves supporting the Institute of Water annual conference, marketing upcoming events to members and administering the Annual Drilling and Tapping Competition and innovation awards.

Sarah Dunn

Professional Registration Coordinator

Sarah is the new Professional Registration Coordinator at Institute of Water.  She is originally from West Yorkshire and graduated with a degree in Community Education from the University of Huddersfield. After getting married and having her first son she started her career in retail and quickly rose to Store Manager for a music and entertainment company.

Taking a career change from Retail to Education, Sarah worked for two of the top Further Education Colleges in the North East for the next 10 years taking on various roles which revolved around learning support, tutoring and mentoring young people while her own boys grew up.

In her spare time Sarah enjoys going to see local bands and gigs with her husband who was a professional musician. They share a love of coastal walking at weekends with their naughty but lovable black Miniature Schnauzer called Sadie.

Sarah’s role in the company is to be the main point of contact for all aspects of Professional Registration in Engineering, Science and Environment from initial enquiry through to application, assessment and finally registration.
